*Based on the languages used as medium of instruction at theUniversity of Pretoria, it is advisable that students should have English and/or Afrikaans as a Home Language or as a First Additional Language, together with any other language of choice. Faculties and/or certain study programmes may impose additional requirements.

ProspectivestudentsinGrade12(finalschool-year)mustusetheirfinalGrade11yearmark(promotionmark) toapply.NoGrade 12 marks will be considered for provisional admission. Please note that prospective students who have already left school should use their NSC/IEB* Certificate to apply (alsorefertoHigherEducationSouthAfricaonpage9).Additionalselection criteria are applicable in applications for selection programmes (see faculty tables from page 11 in this brochure or refer to www.up.ac.za).

Provisional admission is granted on the results obtained in the finalGrade11yearmark(promotionmark).PleasenotethatthefinalGrade12resultsremainthedeterminingfactorwithregardto admission. Also note that the achievement of the minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission to any study programme.

The calculation of an Admission Point Score (APS) is based on acandidatesachievementinanySIXrecognisedNSC20-creditsubjects (not only designated subjects), by using the NSC seven-pointratingscaleinthetablebelow.LifeOrientationisa10-creditsubjectandmaynotbeusedforcalculatingtheAPS.Neither can Mathematics Paper 3 be used for this purpose. 3. Application for admissionApplications open on 1 March of the year preceding the year of study. Owing to the large number of applications received every year, prospective students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible from 1 March. We recommend that you apply online at www.up.ac.za. Once your application form has been processed,youwillreceiveaneight-digitUPstudentnumber.You are also welcome to download an application form from the website. You may follow the progress of your application online via the UP Portal (Student Centre). Visit www.up.ac.za/portal.

However, if you do not have access to the internet you are still welcome to submit an application on paper. Just make surethatyoudonotusethepreviousyearsapplicationformfor this purpose. Application forms are distributed to schools ormay be requested by calling +27 (0)12 420 3111.A non-refundable application levy of R300 must accompany every application. The University will only accept original application forms.Faxed, scanned,or emailedapplication formswill notbe accepted. Each student must complete only one application form.

Theapplicationformprovidesforafirstandsecondchoiceofstudy programme. It is strongly recommended that you also indicate a second choice study programme on your application form. Refer to www.up.ac.za/admissioninfo. It is not advisable toapplyfortwoselectionprogrammesasyourfirstandsecondchoice. Selection programmes are study programmes with early closing dates and limited space and must preferably be indicated as first choice on your application form. It isparticularly important to note that applications for admission to any of the study programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciences and to the selection programmes BScArch Bachelor of Science Architecture or BScInt Bachelor of Science Interior Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, will only be considered if the relevantstudyprogrammeisindicatedasafirstchoiceonyourapplication form.

Restriction on student numbersOwing to constraints on the facilities of the University, the intake of students in all the study programmes is limited. It may even be the case that quotas are reached long before the closing dates. Please note that meeting the minimum requirements ofastudyprogramme,asspecifiedinthisbrochure,doesnotguarantee your admission.

4. Language policy and medium of instruction

In conducting its business, the University uses two officiallanguages: English and Afrikaans. In formal education, themedium of instruction is either English or Afrikaans, or both of these languages, provided that there is a demand and that it is academicallyandeconomicallyjustifiable.However,itremainsthestudentsresponsibilitytoascertainonanannualbasisinwhich language a module and any further level of that module is presented. In respect of administrative and other services, a student has the right to choose whether the University should communicate with him or her in English or Afrikaans.

5. Bursaries, awards and loans (financial aid)

Students who are interested in the support bursaries and loans administered by the University should submit an application viatheUniversityswebsitewww.up.ac.za/feesfunding.Thisis,however, not applicable to achievement awards as a different process is followed in this regard.

Criteria and conditionsGuaranteed undergraduate achievement awards are based on the average percentage obtained (not on the number of distinctions) in the end examination of the final school-yearsubjecttothefollowingconditions: Undergraduate achievement awards are made

automatically to newly registered undergraduate students who meet the award criteria. Students do NOT apply for these awards.

First-yearstudentswhoregisterforstudiesatUPdirectlyafter Grade 12 (final school-year) or who took a gapyear(s)aftertheirfinalschool-year,whomeettheawardcriteria, will be considered.

Students who have previously registered at a tertiaryeducational institution prior to registration at UP will not be considered for an achievement award. Students who registered at UP in previous years, are also not considered.

Qualifying students must be South African citizens orpermanent residents in South Africa, or they must be citizens of a SouthernAfricanDevelopmentCommunity(SADC)country.

Theaveragepercentageforawardpurposesistheaverageof the actual percentages obtained for all recognised NSC/IEB/Cambridgesubjectstaken,intheirfinalschool-yearendexaminations,basedonthecalculationsdonebythe University of Pretoria.

Theaveragepercentageisnotroundedoff. Theawardsarefinalisedonthebasisof thefinalmarks

thattheUniversityreceivesfromtheDepartmentofBasicEducation for the final school-year. Results obtainedforpapers thathavebeen re-markedarenot taken intoaccount for award purposes.

Awards are fully repayable if students discontinue orterminate their studies in the relevant study programme for whatever reason during the year in which the award is made.

Ifstudentschangetheirstudyprogrammesduringtheyearin which the award is made, the award value allocated for the study programme enrolled for initially will remain unchanged. That is to say, the award will not be cancelled or adjusted upward/downward to align it with consecutive study programmes enrolled for.

When modules are repeated, the full tuition fee will be charged again.

Fees paid by bursars Bursaries may or may not cover the full costs of study.

Ensure that you are aware of the full value of your bursary.

Externalcompaniesorotherinstitutions that sponsor students with bursaries, need to make the required payments to the studentsaccountsbythesamedates as if the students were paying the accounts themselves. Half (50%) of the student

account is payable before or on 30 April.

The full (100%) student account is payable before or on 31 July.

Students must submit written proof from the sponsors of the bursary awarded to them prior to registration, otherwise the registration fee will be payable by the student.

Students remain responsible for their student accounts if their bursary sponsor does not pay the account.

Credit balances Amounts in credit on your account are payable.

Payment depends on the source of the credit balance.

The refund form is available on www.up.ac.za/feesfunding or at the Client Service Centre (CSC).

Other living costs These costs are not included on the account.

Payment should be done as required,forexamplebooks,food, travel, stationery, printing and internet.

Students should manage these costs themselves.

Cancellation feesDiscontinuationof studies and discontinuation of a module

Financial needIfyouarenotatallabletopayuniversityfeesduetofinancialneed APPLY ONLINE at www.up.ac.za/feesfunding in 2014 for financial aid for study in 2015, and submit the requiredsupportingdocumentsasevidenceofthisfinancialneed,whichwillberequestedontheapplicationsystem.Theonlinefinancialaid application form will be active annually from 1 August, and yourequireaneight-digitUPstudentnumbertocompletetheform. No loan or bursary is however guaranteed by NSFAS or the University of Pretoria. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2014.

Tuition feesTuition fees for 2015 depend on the study programme and modules selected by a student. For this reason actual costs canonly reflectonastudentsaccountonce registrationhasbeen completed. These fees represent a combination of costs, which include formal services rendered (ie lectures, practicals, computer laboratory access and consumables used in laboratories), as well as indirect overheads such as the provision of library and recreation facilities, security and cleaning services and electricity and water supply. Fees do not include the cost of prescribed books, study material or otherstudy-relatedexpenses.Fortheestimatedtuitionfeeperfaculty for 2014 please consult www.up.ac.za/feesfunding. All

amounts are subject to change and should not be considered to bethefinalcost.Therateofinflationduring2014canbeusedas a guideline to estimate the increase in tuition fees for 2015.

8. AccommodationOnlyalimitednumberofplacesareavailableintheUniversitysresidences. Placement in residences is based on academic achievement (APS) in Grade 11 and the date of your application. Consequently, you are strongly advised to apply for placement in a residence in March of the year preceding your studies. Please note that the demand for residence accommodation exceedstheavailabilityandadmissiontoastudyprogrammecan thus not guarantee placement in a residence. Guaranteed placement in residence only applies to students who meet the minimum requirements of the UP special offer to top academic achievers. Please visit www.up.ac.za/admissioninfo.

Application for placement in a residence is made on the application form for a study programme. Placement in a residence then takes place AFTER a prospective student has been provisionally admitted to a study programme. A bus service operates betweenKatjiepiering, themens

residencesandtheHatfieldCampus.Theserviceisfreeofcharge to residents.

All students studying Education and applying foraccommodation are automatically considered for residence placement at the Groenkloof Campus. Students, who study other programmes and attend classes at the Hatfield Campus, are also considered for residences atthe Groenkloof Campus. A free bus service between the Hatfield and Groenkloof Campus is available for thesestudents.

If you have applied for any of the study programmes inHealth Sciences as well as placement in a residence, you willfirstbeconsideredtemporarilyforresidencessituatedon theHatfieldCampus.Studentswhoare thenselectedfor Health Sciences will be accommodated on the Prinshof Campus with compliance to the availability of places.

During holiday periods residences are used for guestaccommodation. Maintenance and upgrades are done during the April, July and December holiday periods.Students are therefore expected to vacate residencesduring these periods.

A prescribed reservation fee for residence place, is payable once you have been notified in writing that you have beenplaced in a residence.

These include the MRC, the CSIR, the ARC and the HSRC. Statisticians are also involved in the training of students at universities.
