Soul Walking: Count Basie Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald were the first African Americans to win Grammy awards in 1958 (the first year the Grammy Awards took place). Ella Fitzgerald won both the Best Female Vocal Performance for "The Irving Berlin Songbook" and Best Individual Jazz Performance for "The Duke Ellington Songbook."
