    Hello Everybody,

Well, here we are in November. Quite a reflective month don't you think? Apart from

Armistice Day, which of course is a day of reflection and gratitude for all those who

suffered for our freedom, there is this feeling of looking back over the year and

things quietening down before the mad rush and excitement of Christmas.

The gardening tools and sandals are put away and the knitting needles and Scrabble

board dug out as we once again embrace the season of Mist and mellow fruitfulness.

(Does anyone know the second line of the poem? I think I know the words, but not

necessarily in the right order!) Enjoy this calm it won't last. Gina

    GRIMSTON MEDICAL CENTRE

    01485 600341

    GASTROENTERITIS

Diarrhoea and vomiting are often caused by viruses. Vomiting usually

settles within 24 - 48 hours, and diarrhoea may persist for a few days

after the vomiting has settled. Provided that the patient is able to drink

to replace the fluid lost in diarrhoea/vomit, there is usually no need to

    seek medical attention.

Try to ensure a normal fluid intake by drinking plenty. If you are

vomiting, drink small amounts frequently. There is no need to starve.

In babies, milk feeds may be stopped for up to 24 hours, but should

then be restarted at full strength. Breast feeding should continue.

    When to see the doctor

If a child who is ill refuses to drink

If diarrhoea persists for more than one week

If diarrhoea recurs on restarting milk feeds

If a child with diarrhoea or vomiting has a temperature for more

    than 24 hours

If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell

    Sick notes for minor illnesses

Doctors do not issue sick notes for

    illnesses that last up

    to one week.

You should ask your employer for a

    Self -Certificate form, which your

    employer is legally obliged to

    accept.

OLLARISHIONERST A POLLARISHIONERST A PI recently accompanied two of our schools Harpley and Great Massingham - on a

visit to Norwich Cathedral where, with other Norfolk primary schools, they explored

the question: Who is Jesus? The children and teachers! - were given many

opportunities all around the cathedral to explore in small groups different aspects of

Jesus' life and work. They took with them beautiful crosses they had made with the

schools' prayers on them which were used in a service at the end of the day. I was

privileged to be alongside our schools. The children behaved impeccably and really

engaged with different learning opportunities on offer, which ranged from music and

movement, writing a praise song, acting and thinking about different ways to pray

and listening to stories from Jesus' life. Well done to everyone, you did us all

    proud!

Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot... Yes, it's

that Guy Fawkes time of year once more. Don't forget to keep safe if you are

having a Bonfire Party or going to a fireworks display. Remember the Firework

Code. You can't be too careful with so many dangers around.

    th

November also brings the season of Remembrance. This year November 8 will be th

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day falls the following Wednesday (11 .) It is

profoundly important to have this annual opportunity to remember with deep

gratitude the ultimate sacrifice made by members of our Armed Forces (and also

civilians) both in previous wars - and those who tragically continue to lose their lives

to this day in theatres of war throughout the world for the freedoms we hold so dear.

Let us also remember the work of the Royal British Legion, providing lifelong support

for the Armed forces community, and other important military charities. There are

many veterans living with the consequences of life-changing mental or physical

injuries, re-building their lives. You may have seen the recent BBC programme DIY

SOS from Manchester? It brought home the great need to affirm and empower our

veterans and their families in civilian life after their careers in the Armed Forces have

ended. May God bless us all,

    Revd Judith.

    LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL

    REPORT

The Parish Council met on Wednesday

    14th October 2015.

The Parish Council was pleased to

report that a solution had been found to

having a bus stop formalized along

Gayton Road. This stop has been in

existence for a while, but NCC is

hoping to formalize it with a pole.

Residents at number 14 have very

kindly agreed to this outside their

house. Cllr Coke was present and

explained that money is allocated at

County for a small number of projects

like this; the money couldn't be used in

any other area. The Parish Council is

delighted with this solution and pleased

to have a formal bus stop as it appears

The silica sand review is now under

way. Leziate Parish Council was very

keen that they would be involved at the

beginning of the next stage which is the

areas of search. Cllr Coke explained

that this won't happen and we will only

be consultees after this has taken

place. The Parish Council felt that the

whole review needs to be monitored

It seems that a lot of the Highway work

that was expected to be actioned is still

waiting to be done. Once again

Councillors raised the issue of the

    Parish Council and NCC liaising,

particularly in the case of Highways and

    footpaths.

teams to paths that hadn't been cut

rather than cutting certain paths a

    number of times.

The Clerk will continue to try and get

    some work done by Highways.

Once again a query was raised about

the speed limit in East Winch Road. Cllr

Coke explained that this road does not

meet the criteria for a lower speed limit.

Cllr Barnet queried if the criteria for

    Norfolk should be reviewed.

    Concern was raised about obnoxious

odours in Gayton Road. If this affects

you then the advice is to contact

BCKLWN on 616200 option 2. They are

aware of the problem but if they can

highlight who is being affected then it

    will help their investigation.

Cllr Coke reported that there are going

to be some severe cuts at County Hall,

and the council tax will probably

increase, but hopefully by no more than

2%. It appears that the Parish Council

will be asked to take on more duties in

    the coming financial year.

The Parish Council agreed to get

quotations to prune the hedge on the

left hand side of the Village Hall and

next month we should be able to make

    a decision on this work.

Leziate Parish Council next meets on th

    11 November 2015, 7.30pm in the

    village hall. All parishioners are

    welcome.

    GAYTON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Members were pleased to welcome Hazel Gillingham to the October meeting. She

gave a talk on the life of Mary Seacole. Mary Seacole was born in Jamaica in 1805 of a

British father and Jamaican mother. She was brought up by her grandmother as her

mother owned and ran a store and hotel on the island. However, much of Mary's

entrepreneurship and medical knowledge came from her mother. She gained further

knowledge as she embarked on many travels outside the Caribbean. With her brother

she owned a hotel in Panama for a while and there was instrumental in helping and

saving patients suffering from cholera, having suffered from the disease herself. She

once again journeyed to England when the Crimean War broke out. She applied to the

War Office and Florence Nightingale's group of nurses to be allowed to go to the Crimea

and tend to the sick and wounded but was turned away. Undeterred she joined a

distant relative who was going to Balaclava on business. They set up a general store

and hotel near the British camp in the summer of 1855 near the besieged city of

Sevastopol. Although her work tending wounded soldiers was appreciated by the

British Army, when she returned to England after the war she didn't receive the

recognition she deserved and which was afforded to Florence Nightingale and her

group. However, in recent years Mary Seacole's efforts in overcoming discrimination

and prejudice - risking her life to bring comfort to wounded and dying soldiers - is at last

being recognised. Hazel was thanked for her most interesting and enthusiastic talk.

Various Centenary events had been enjoyed in September, particular the Nar Valley

Group Tea Party held in the Assembly Rooms, Swaffham, when the food served was

based on the same menu as that served to W.I. members at the Buckingham Palace

Garden Party in June. Arrangements were discussed for the Nar Valley Group Meeting

as was the annual visit to Caithness Crystal in November.

The competition to guess the weight of an object was won by Hilda Bond the winning

weight being 2lbs. 10 ozs. and the prize being the object a bottle of rum. Handy for

    your Christmas cakes Hilda!

    rd

The next meeting on Tuesday 3 November will include the Annual General Meeting

when various reports will be given and an election of the new Committee will take place.

    Web Quiz

Last month we set you a quiz based on the history of the Churches in

    our benefice.

All the answers can be found on our web site at

www.ggmbenefice.uk , along with lots more information but if you

couldn't find an answer (and the quick way was to use the search

    button) then here they are:

It is Congham Church that was connected to the Rectory by an underground tunnel.

It is Gayton Church that has a bronze sculpture of Jacob wrestling the Angel.

Great Massingham Church was where Sir Robert Walpole was taught in the Porch.

Roydon Church was re designed by an architectural practice that included William Morris.

Gayton Thorpe has a Sacramental font, often described as one of the great mediaeval

    treasures.

Grimston Church has a whole host of mediaeval carvings that include a mermaid.

Ashwicken Church's font was carved in Benares, India and presented to the Church

    .

Harpley Church is another Church with interesting carvings including a squirrel.

Both Little Massingham and Grimston Church have carvings of a Green Man.

Amazingly East Walton Church still has and uses its chalice dating back to 1681.

Many of these can be seen in photographs on the site along with pictures taken at events

such as the Grimston Tractor Rally, Congham's Snail Race and Harpley's Art Festival.

    Light Up A Life

Christmas is almost here for another year. It is during this time that friends and

family come together to share this special season. However, it is always difficult

when we think of those who unfortunately cannot share it with us.

The hospice would like to invite members of the local community to remember a

special person or people this Christmas by dedicating a light on our Christmas tree

which will be brightly lit in front of the Hospice during December. Anyone who

wishes to make a dedication should call the Hospice fundraising team on 01485

601701 or pick up a leaflet from one of the Hospice shops.

As part of your Light up a Life dedication, you will have:-

The opportunity to attend a Light up a Life service during December, when

guests will be able to light a candle.

The names of your loved ones entered into our Light up a Life Book of

    Remembrance.

Your loved ones names entered into our Light up a Life Order of Service.

This year the Hospice is hosting four Light up a Life services. The services are open

to everyone, not just people who have made a dedication.

    th

Sunday 6 December at King's Lynn Minster (3pm)th

Monday 7 December at Sandringham Visitor Centre (5pm)th

Thursday 10 December at The Norfolk Hospice, Hillington (5.30pm)

Everyone at the Hospice looks forward to welcoming the community at the services.

    Advent Course 2015

In four sessions we will be reflecting on The

Nativity, using the BBC dvd of the series, The

    Nativity.th rd

Dates and times are November 26 , December 3 , th

    10th and 17 , staring at 7pm until 8.30pm.

It will be held at The Limes, Lynn Rd Gayton, home

of Rev'd Sue Martin for a maximum of 10 people.

To find out more please contact Sue on 01553

    Gina's Page

An irregular page for fun things

    Now for something completely different

Gluten free, diary free and sugar free chocolate cake!! I know, I know .But trust me

this is yummy! Makes a 9 one-layer cake

1-19oz can of unseasoned black beans strained and rinsed; 5 large eggs

    1 tblsp pure vanilla extract; tspn sea salt; 6 tblsp of coconut oil melted;

cup of honey + 1tspn of sugar substitute (eg Stevia); 6 tblsp of unsweetened

cocoa powder; 1 tspn baking powder; tspn baking soda.

Pre heat oven to 170 degs. Grease a 9 tin (I use a spring clip one) and place round

of parchment in the bottom. Shake excess water off the beans and place in a

blender or food processor along with three of the eggs, vanilla, Stevia and salt. Blend

until it is all liquefied and no lumps! Put in the cocoa powder, baking powder and

soda and whizz for another minute, then add the coconut oil, honey and two

remaining eggs and whizz again. Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin and

smooth over. Rap the tin a couple of times on the worktop to get rid of any air

bubbles. Put it in the oven for 40-45 minutes. Cake is cooked when it is firm to the

touch. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 mins. Then turn it out onto a cooling tray.

Now you can top it with sugar free vanilla butter cream, but, dear reader, this is

where I fell at the final fence and I melted a good bar of chocolate with a bit of butter

and spread this on the top. Enjoy.

    And Finally..

The Grim Reaper came for me last night, but I beat him off with the vacuum cleaner.

    Talk about Dyson with death.....

I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move.

    Gina

Whilst putting the grandsons to bed, I started out years ago saying night night

and I love you this much..arms akimbo, then it was arms all the way round my

back... then as they were a bit older, round the world and back and now to all

the planets and back.... Last half-term, a cheeky Dylan popped his head out of

the top bunk and said And I like you to Gaywood and back,,,,,,,,,Quickly

    followed by Not really grandma

    Mineral Extraction: pending Sibelco application.

Several years ago, land to the north of the A47 and west of East Winch (Min 41) was

earmarked as suitable for mineral extraction. Sibelco is preparing to make a planning

application in the first quarter of 2016, at which point objections may be made. To

inform people who may be affected, and to hear people's views, they are holding th

information days on Friday,13 November from 4pm and on Saturday, 14th

November 10-4 at the village hall.

If planning permission is granted, Sibelco intends to divide extraction into 3 phases,

starting with the area nearest Grandcourt Farm. The footpath will be diverted along

Long Drove. After removal of topsoil and carstone, the pit will be 25-30 metres deep.

The silica sand extracted will be taken back to Leziate across the worked area and

    will not go by road.

The final stage, nearest to the village, will bring extraction within 150-200 metres of

the nearest houses, but 100 metres from Holland House. Restoration will consist of

making sloping sides and creating lakes divided by a causeway along which the path

will go. The lakes, about 12 metres deep, will be fenced.

Sibelco maintains that the sand quarried poses no risk to health as, at 30-50 microns

it cannot be absorbed by the lungs, while finer particulates from diesel and other

pollutants are much more dangerous. The noise level is not expected to exceed the

    noise from the A47.

    Bats

It's been another tricky summer coping with the maternity roost in the church. Thank

you so much to everyone who helps to try to keep it clean. We know it's an

impossible task and we are still trying to get things changed so that the bats are

confined to the roof space as they were when the building works were carried out.

The bats are only in the church over the summer breading period, so we have the

Autumn and Winter to sort the problem out. Hopefully the cleaning next Summer will

be a much less onerous task.

    Internal Changes to the Church

We have recently received permission from the Archdeacon to investigate what is

going on behind the reredos. We are now able to remove the reredos and store it.

Once we know what's behind it, we can decide what needs to be done, if anything to

make the wall good and apply for full permission to do whatever is required. At that

point we will also apply with respect to the organ. A lot of background work and

research is being completed to find out the best solution and we will give a full

update when we have more information. In the meantime we have an electric organ

in the church for use in services.

    Services

We are continuing with our Celtic style services. They are a beautiful and peaceful

end to the weekend and worth coming to investigate it you haven't been yet.

Our Christmas Carols by Candlelight will be happening in December. I will be asking

for helpers to read, so if you think you might like to, please get in touch. I will confirm

the date when we will be decorating the church in the next Magazine issue. It is likely

to be around the 10th December."

    Thanks Sarah

    .

    QEH MATTERS

The Trust is doing some work to improve people's experience of visiting the hospital.

To make visiting easier, all the entrances have been colour coded to match the zone

colours. These will be included in the letters and on the car park.

The restaurant on the first floor has undergone a refurbishment and will open in

November as a caf style space open to all, with longer opening hours, barista coffee

machines and improved offerings. Profits from here go to the Trust so do use it if you

    can.

The wards are also being refurbished in turn, with Windsor ward being the first one.

The vacant Necton Ward is being used to accommodate patients from each ward

while the work is being done.

They are hoping to get Wi-Fi installed next year. A huge piece of work!

    Norovirus

With winter approaching, people are being asked to help keep Norovirus out of the

hospital. This is one of the most infectious agents that faces the NHS every year; with

this in mind and with Norovirus already spreading in the community, it is important

everyone remembers the key practices to fight these bugs.

Do not visit the hospital if you have experienced diarrhea or vomiting in the past 72

    hours.

Wash your hands regularly and particularly before and food or drink is consumed.

Protect yourself and your family and friends by thinking carefully before bringing

food and drink into the hospital. Pat Watts
