The House of Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela, by Moris Beracha The House of Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela, by Moris Beracha Among the most popular historical sites to visit in Caracas, the house of Simón Bolívar commemorates the Venezuelan leader known as El Libertador, or the Liberator. Born at the home in 1783, Simón Bolívar became influential in Venezuela's declaration of independence from Spanish rule. Now recognized as a hero for the vital role he played in obtaining the country's freedom, he also expanded his military prowess across South America throughout the early 1800s, fighting against the Spaniards for countries such as Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru. The house in Caracas itself preserves the structure built by Simón Bolívar's great-grandfather as well as many of its original furnishings, including furniture and portraits, giving a taste of the historical period. It also showcases a series of full-size paintings by a modern Venezuelan artist, Tito Salas. These provide an imaginative insight into Simón Bolívar's exploits.
