The future of the specialty
This report considers the many issues which willalter the future of renal medicine. Workingpatterns for renal physicians are likely to changesubstantially as collaborative services aredeveloped with primary care, palliative care, and other specialist teams. Multiprofessional team-working continues to expand, challenginglong-established medical roles and expectations of young doctors are changing. This report isdesigned to make sure that the next generation of renal physicians is trained to meet thesechallenges.
Recommendations include expanding services inlocality renal networks, including consultantnumbers; ensuring wider availability of high-quality care close to peoples homes; encouragingstaff grade and associate specialist doctors to jointhe Specialist Register; and promoting renalmedicine as a career by ensuring a positiveexperience for medical students and FoundationYear trainees.
