Vasilakos</p><p>Published online: 21 March 2014# Springer Science+Business Media New York 2014</p><p>Recently the cloud computing technology has emerged as anew information technology infrastructure for the fast devel-oping IT industry. In cloud computing, information is perma-nently stored in large-scale data centers on the Internet all overthe world and temporarily accessed and cached on clientsincluding desktops and portable PCs, sensors, etc. With thecloud as a metaphor for the Internet, cloud computingpromises to deliver massively scalable IT-enabled data, soft-ware, and hardware capabilities as a service to external clientswith Internet accesses. And the highly scalable computationcapability of the cloud data centers can further assist andaccelerate most of our computation intensive services andworks effectively. Therefore the cloud computing has beenenvisioned as the key technology to achieve economies ofscale in the deployment and operation of IT solutions.</p><p>Regarding recent advances in mobile communication tech-nologies, a new wave of user demands for rich mobile serviceexperience has been fueled. Mobile users always expect broad-band Internet access wherever they go, interact with each othervia social networks while moving; furthermore, they are seek-ing ubiquitous access to a wealth of media-based contents andservices. Because mobile devices are resource limited inherent-ly, it is essential for the cloud to provide computational support</p><p>for many media-rich applications. The combination of mobilemedia and cloud computing highly arises many technical chal-lenges, and the fundamental tension between resource-hungrymultimedia streams and power-limitedmobile devices has to beresolved. The effort for providing a universal rich-media expe-rience across any screen is typically hindered by the heteroge-neity amongst ever-evolving mobile devices, as manifested intheir different physical form factors, middleware platforms, andinteractive functions. Furthermore the developments ofinnovative pervasive mobile services, e.g., mobile videostreaming, rich media dissemination, surveillance, gam-ing, e-health care, etc., can be greatly facilitated byMobile Cloud Computing (MCC) platform employingemerged and emerging technologies.</p><p>This issue consists of five papers addressing the variousaspects ofMCC, such as mobile cloud computing services andapplications, mobile cloud gaming, integration of MCC withCyber-Physical Systems (CPS), as well as the relationshipbetween cloud computing and big data. The issue opens witha comprehensive survey on diverse ways of combining cloudcomputing and mobile platforms towards a new computing/communications paradigm. In Mobile Cloud Computing: ASurvey, State of Art and Future Directions, M. R. Rahimiet al. provided a complete survey on the field of MCC on itsstate of art applications, research challenges, opportunities andfuture research directions. The typical MCC applications arediscussed, such as mobile learning, commerce, healthcare andsocial networks. The authors further identify research gapsfrom three critical aspects from enhancing the efficiency oftask offloading to improve the business model, and the re-search challenges and opportunities are made clear within thecontext of the existing schemes.</p><p>In the paper ACloudlet-AssistedMultiplayer Cloud Gam-ing System by W. Cai et al., the authors proposed a novelcloudlet-assisted multiplayer cloud gaming system, in whichthe mobile devices are connected to the cloud server for real-time interactive game videos, while sharing the received video</p><p>M. Experimentalresults show that expected server transmission rate can besignificantly reduced compared to the conventional videoencoding schemes for cloud games.</p><p>The third article titled VCMIA: A Novel Architecture forIntegrating Vehicular Cyber-Physical Systems and MobileCloud Computing from J. Wan et al., designed a vehicularCPS and MCC Integration Architecture (VCMIA), whichprovides mobile services for potential users such as driversand passengers to access mobile traffic cloud. Then, the au-thors analyze two crucial cloud-supported components: Geo-graphic Information System (GIS) with traffic-aware capabil-ity and cloud-supported dynamic vehicle routing. Finally, thevehicle maintenance service as an application scenario is usedto carry out the validation.</p><p>In the paper Cloud-assisted Computing for Event-drivenMobile Services, A. Boukerche et al., discussed the impor-tance and challenges in designing event driven mobile ser-vices that will detect conditions of interest to users and notifythem accordingly. Today, software developers for desktopcomputing build request and respond applications to do whatend users tell them to do and answer what they ask. In mobilecomputing, software developers will need to develop senseand response applications that will interact with the end user.These applications will notify or ask users what they want</p><p>based onwhat they have sensed or on a personal profile. MCChas the potential to empower mobile users with capabilitiesnot found in mobile devices, combining different and hetero-geneous data sets.</p><p>The main objective of cloud computing is to use hugecomputing and storage resources under concentrated man-agement, so as to provide big data applications with fine-grained computing capacity. On the other hand, the emer-gence of big data also accelerates the development ofcloud computing. The last paper Big Data: A Surveypresented the relationship between cloud computing andbig data. The distributed storage technology based oncloud computing can effectively manage big data; theparallel computing capacity by virtualization of cloudcomputing can improve the efficiency of acquisition andanalyzing big data. The evolution of big data was drivenby the rapid growth of application demands and cloudcomputing developed from virtualized technologies.</p><p>We would like to thank all the reviewers for their effortsand constructive comments.
